Established in Winnipeg in 2007, 5468796 was born from a place where conventional solutions and regressive planning strategies prevailed, aiming for a new status quo through new architectural propositions. Further, the firm believes that every client, user and civic environment – regardless of budget – deserves an outcome that advances architecture and contributes to vibrant communities.
Instead of looking for silver-bullet solutions, the practice pursues invention as a way to re-instate legitimacy of Architecture in everyday life — it does so by finding opportunities in the most rudimentary of briefs and re-imagining the role of architecture in our cities. While aiming to execute this agenda locally on all fronts, from advocacy to teaching to public engagement and making, 546's work continues to be recognized throughout the world for its resilience, resourcefulness and the rigorous pursuit of innovation, further inspiring the firm to re-invent its approach for every new challenge.
Recent project awards include World Architecture Festival finalist recognition; Progressive Architecture Awards; Awards for Emerging Architecture and Future Project recognition from the Architectural Review; three Governor General's Medals in Architecture and Awards of Excellence from the RAIC; as well as two-time finalist recognition from IIT’s emerging MCHAP awards.
Firm recognitions include DOMUS' prestigious 2020 top 50 Architects Guide, the RAIC Emerging Architectural Practice Award, selection as a WAN 21 for 21 Award Winner, and features in the Wallpaper* Architects Directory, the Architectural League of NY Emerging Voices lecture series, and the Design Vanguard issue of Architectural Record. In 2012, 5468796 co-curated Migrating Landscapes, Canada's official submission to the Venice Biennale in Architecture.
In 2013, the Canada Council for the Arts awarded 5468796 the Professional Prix de Rome in Architecture for their project, Table for Twelve, which allowed them to visit and research cities around the world with a thriving design culture.
